Canton High School Science Teacher John Magoulick knows students in his Senior STEM Capstone course have missed out on so much this year learning in the remote environment. That’s why this exceptional teacher has fought through many challenges trying to facilitate a collaborative, project centered class without being in an in-person learning environment. This veteran teacher says he has been amazed at what his kids are capable of when asked. As much as he can, he likes to keep the experience in this course similar to what it would have been if he and his students were within the four walls of the school.
Using virtual meeting technology, classes are even more accessible than ever before. Magoulick has had students Zoom in from their cars on a family trip, from hotel rooms in sunny Florida, and even from hospital beds before medical treatments. Attendance has never been as good as it is now and he is trying to take advantage of it.

The students use breakout rooms daily to work on their projects with each other. In a recent project, classes were charged with the task of creating a community health profile of their chosen geographic area. They had to identify a target problem in that area and come up with an innovative idea to have a positive impact on that problem. Students worked for a couple weeks brainstorming and creating really great presentations for the class.
Sounds like this teacher has the formula down for a great learning experience.
