Helping Students Cope with COVID 19

East Middle School Counselor Samantha Ellis

East Middle School counselor Samantha Ellis knows that her students miss being together at school. Ellis believes that the social development of her students is just as important as academics, so she created a way to get her middle schoolers together and stimulate conversation.

During the fall, Ellis introduced Social Lunches, a fun way for students to see their friends every Friday and engage in interactive activities that make them feel less isolated. Students play games together online, such as “Would You Rather” and “Among Us.” Using technology, Ellis takes online polls and reports the results. The questions are designed to be fun and make students talk and laugh.

Participants also get to show off their pets and share what's going on in their lives in the COVID world. Ellis has created a “Collaborate Board” where students can report “something cool” that happened to them this week or something that was a “bummer.” All prompts are designed to get students to talk about themselves and hear from classmates.

It may not be exactly the same as face-to-face, but this creative counselor has found a safe way for students to hang out and have fun.
