Virtual Interactive Notebooks Proving to be a Valuable Tool

Virtual Academy Teacher Jason Nordbeck

As teachers and students adjust to the world of remote classrooms, some new and exciting learning tools have been developed that will likely be used for years to come. Elementary Virtual Academy Teacher, Jason Nordbeck, has discovered one such tool and his students use it daily. Introducing the Interactive Virtual Notebook.

Nordbeck puts all of his lessons on slides and shares them with his class. Each slide is an assignment that Nordbeck creates in Canvas, and all subjects are covered from English to social studies. His fifth grade students (from Farrand, Eriksson and Bentley) then copy and paste those slides into their Digital Notebooks. As they progress through each unit, students add slides to their collection, building upon what they have previously learned.

Nordbeck says this is a much more efficient way for him to monitor student work without them having to take pictures of their paper notebook and upload them to Canvas. While in class, he is able to view each student’s Virtual Interactive Notebook pages from his computer while they are completing assignments. This allows him to give suggestions in real time.

Nordbeck says that teaching virtually is definitely more challenging, but this crafty veteran teacher is meeting that challenge with innovative methods that help his students learn.
