A Sweet and Effective Way to Teach Kindergarteners About Writing
Farrand Teacher Maria LaPorte

During a recent writing lesson, LaPorte wanted her young writers to capture what they saw exactly the way they found it. As a class, students observed a sprinkled donut, and had to draw the exact details they saw. After careful observation and time to draw, students shared how they included details such as the paper plate, the frosting, and picking out the correct crayons to match the sprinkle colors. Then students held up their drawing to show their work on screen.
As a class, they discussed what the sentence would be for what they saw. The students then worked together to stretch out words and write on their own paper. Once students were done, they had to complete a Seesaw assignment of taking a picture of their donut observation and sentence so the teacher could see the work they completed.
