Field Elementary third grade teacher Nick Ivacko calls this school year a "balancing act."

It’s not Magic, It’s Just Good Teaching

Field Elementary Teacher Nick Ivacko

Field Elementary third grade teacher Nick Ivacko calls this school year a “balancing act.” With limited in-person time and the constraints of the remote environment, he was concerned about his young students getting enough time to read, considering all the other subjects covered each day.

With this in mind, Ivacko encouraged students to continue reading during their "at-home" part of the day and started a Weekly Reading Challenge. The students are given a challenge of reading in as many different ways as they can. This includes "Wide Reading": Reading varied genres and types of texts - "Wild Reading": Reading in unusual settings or ways, like in the car, with a pointer or flashlight, reading outside, while waiting for something, recording yourself, etc., and "Sharing Reading": Reading with or to different family members/pets/etc.

Ivacko says students have really enjoyed it and love to share the different ways they read at the end of each week. Students also have created mini-competitions amongst their classmates about who is reading the most. Ivacko says participation and work completion has gone way up since the challenge started, and he is so proud of his class.

Nick Ivacko is not a magician or any other kind of performer. He is, however, one heck of a teacher.
