Kids Need Music Now More Than Ever

Gallimore and Smith Music Teacher Katy Covington

During this extraordinary year, elementary music educator Katy Covington believes that music is essential for students. For her students at Gallimore and Smith Elementary Schools, Covington has created a virtual space where kids can express themselves and demonstrate their knowledge of the music curriculum in a variety of ways. She has created more than 33 Canvas courses, including how-to-videos, Social and Emotional Learning spaces related to music, movement videos, sing-alongs, and lessons tailored to individual students' grade level interests and prior knowledge.

Covington, a 10-year veteran teacher, wants her students to have a space to create, perform, and honor their identity, thoughts, and feelings. Through the lessons she has posted on Canvas, students have submitted poetry, rap, individual singing and instrumental performance, lyrics, and composition. Covington connects with her classes weekly via Zoom and always begins with the truthful statement that seeing students’ faces and making music together is the best part of her day.
