Liberty Teachers Welcome Student Returning to In-Person Learning
Liberty Sixth Grade Teachers
Last week the sixth grade teachers at Liberty Middle School rolled out the welcome wagon for their students on the first day of in-person learning. As a 6th grade team, the teachers tried to streamline the welcome back process as much as possible to avoid students feeling overwhelmed. This orientation usually takes place in the spring and fall, but COVID has prevented these first-time middle school students from seeing their new school until now, and it’s a big change from elementary school.
Teachers wrote and sent home a welcome newsletter outlining plans the week before students returned to the building. They also provided activities in each hour to ensure all students got the same information on the first day. For example, 1st hour classes went on tours of the school and learned lunch procedures. Students in 2nd hour classes made name tags and were taught how to read their class schedules. During 3rd hour, classes spent time talking about dismissal and end of day procedures. The teachers wanted 6th graders to have the most authentic first day of school experience possible.

Everyone can recall the anxious feeling they got when school started each year. Add to this the pressure of attending a new school with new classmates in the middle of a pandemic. Liberty’s 6th grade teaching team remembered that feeling and did all it could to make everyone feel at ease and welcome. Now that’s good old fashioned hospitality!
