P-CCS Science Teachers Sarah Avery, Jennifer Coffman and Sue Evans
It’s not quite the same as the science lessons Bill Nye presents on television, but P-CCS eighth grade science teachers Sarah Avery, Jennifer Coffman, and Sue Evans are still delivering science at home that is fun and interesting -- just like the Science Guy. For years these three teachers have enjoyed helping students stay engaged learning science, and they continued that tradition this year when they set up "in-class labs."
In these remote experiments, students gather simple materials from home to explore ideas being taught live on Zoom during class. In one lab, students modeled convergent plate boundaries by using towels, and cardboard (or folders). In another, students used a pencil, a piece of paper and the item of the year-- a roll of toilet paper-- to model volcanic hot spot formation. By having cameras on, and sharing their models live together during class time, students have been able to get real-time feedback, deepen their thinking, and show their understanding of concepts being examined.
