Plymouth Officer Shoots, Kills Man in Disturbance Case

A city of Plymouth police officer shot and killed a man late Sunday while on duty in the area of Joy and Lilley roads in Plymouth Township, according to Plymouth Director of Public Safety Al Cox.

The officer, who was in the area, was the first on the scene to assist Plymouth Township Police with a report of a disturbance in progress just before 11 p.m. Sunday, Cox said. Two other offices were en route, Cox said, at the time of the shooting.

The victim, who lived in the area, was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead. Police are withholding his identity. 

Cox said the officer, whose name is not being released, is not currently on duty, but appeared to be "fine" after the incident. Cox did not say what prompted the officer to fire his weapon.

Cox said "it's been decades" since the last fatal shooting by a Plymouth officer, noting there hadn't been any such cases in his time with the department.  

Cox declined to discuss specifics of the case because Michigan State Police is investigating the shooting, as is standard procedure for officer-involved fatalities.

A message was left Monday afternoon with Michigan State Police officials seeking more information.
