Police also shared some tips to help homeowners protect their properties:
- Check for easy access points such as unlocked doors, low windows, or tall shrubs that provide concealment. Keep valuables and electronics out of plain sight from windows.
- Trim shrubs and trees to eliminate hiding spots.
- Use lighting strategically. Well-lit homes are less likely to be targeted. Consider installing a motion-activated or dusk-to-dawn exterior lighting around entrances and driveways.
- Secure doors and windows. Always lock all entry points, including garage doors, even when home. Consider smart locks or door sensors for added peace of mind.
- Store valuables safely. Use a heavy or mounted safe or lockbox to secure cash, jewelry and important documents.
- Leverage security technology. Doorbell and exterior cameras can deter theft and provide valuable evidence if a crime occurs.
- Stay alert and connected. Watch out for suspicious activities and communicate regularly with trusted neighbors when you’re away from home. Avoid sharing vacation plans publicly until after you return.
