High School Teacher Uses Students’ Electronic Skills to Enhance Learning

Teenagers love their phones and apps such as TikTok, Snapchat and Instagram where users create videos and use other electronic sources to express their ideas. In a similar way, Starkweather High School Teacher Megan Tyler is encouraging students to use those same skills when doing their schoolwork. This approach has been especially successful in the remote learning environment.

Tyler has been at Starkweather for five of the nine years she has been a teacher, and she currently teaches social studies and film/video production. Students in her history classes are using visual data, presentations and historical artifacts to complete assignments. Students are accessing information through the Library of Congress websites, online museums and digital galleries which showcase primary sources for art and photographs.
In her video production class, students are using the program WeVideo and their cell phones or Chromebooks to create short student films. For one recent project, students were tasked with creating an action or chase sequence either by filming new footage or through editing of stock videos and effects provided by WeVideo. Currently, students are working on a project documenting what life has been like for them during the COVID pandemic.

Helping students learn and have fun in a remote setting isn’t always easy, but Tyler has found a way to make learning exciting and relevant.
