Oakland County Homeland Security Division has canceled the previously scheduled outdoor warning siren test today due to possible inclement weather.

Update 10:45 a.m.: The Oakland County Homeland Security Division has canceled the previously scheduled outdoor warning siren test today due to possible inclement weather.

"In an effort to ensure the outdoor warning sirens are affective and the public seeks shelter when activated, we will not conduct tests when possible storms are in the area," the department reported on its web site.

The next regularly scheduled siren test will be the first Saturday in May at 1 p.m.

5 a.m.: Oakland County will test its outdoor warning system at 1 p.m. today, according to the Oakland Press.

According to the report, the county has 252 sirens used to alert residents of severe weather dangers, with each siren having a range of about one mile.

The test is part of the county's plans to raise awareness of severe weather alerts and give schools and businesses a chance to test their emergency plans during regular operating hours, the report said.
