Rochester Hills Restricts Lawn Irrigation, Fines Possible
Fines of up to $500 are possible for repeated violations of the city's ordinance.

ROCHESTER HILLS, MI — Rochester Hills officials are reminding residents that use of automatic irrigation systems is limited to between midnight and 5 a.m. Using the system in off hours saves both the city and residents money, they say. Violation of the city ordinance can lead to fines of up to $500.
“This avoids high water usage during peak times,” Rochester Hills City Councilwoman Susan Bowyer said. “This also keeps our water rates lower. Also, stagger start times. Make it 1:22 a.m. or eight minutes after the hour. Don’t try to start your watering right on the hour. This will really help with our overall watering costs.”
First-time ordinance violators will receive a warning. Subsequent offenders may be charged with a municipal civil infraction and a fine of up to $500.
According to Great Lakes Water Authority officials, homeowners are often unsure about how much water their lawns actually need and when the best time to water is — which can lead to water waste and possible damage to lawns,” C & G Newspapers reported.
