Rochester Is Looking For Artists For Its Skateboard Competition

The annual event is approaching and Rochester is looking for artists to take part.

ROCHESTER, MI — Downtown Rochester is calling all artists: Elementary School, Middle School, High School, College, and Adult to participate in Downtown Rochester’s Ninth Annual Skateboard Art Competition & Exhibition: Deck Art 2019. Artists are asked to provide their unique work on a blank skateboard deck. Winning pieces will be picked in each category by a panel of judges, and prizes will be awarded. Deck Art 2019 is scheduled for May 9 & 10.


This year’s event is expected to include as many as 50 local merchants, transforming Deck Art 2019 into a Downtown Rochester crawl. Completed artwork will be artfully displayed throughout participating restaurants and businesses for onlookers to enjoy. Last year’s Deck Art 2018 drew over 500 artists from all over South Eastern Michigan. In the past, the states of Arizona, California, Indiana, Illinois, Kansas, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, as well as Canada were represented.

The Rochester Downtown Development Authority (DDA) will host both the Thursday Night Kickoff on May 9, and Friday Night Crawl on May 10, both from 5:00 – 9:00 pm. The events will include unique artwork, musical entertainment and a kid’s activity. Specific event details will be available in the coming months.

Registration for Deck Art 2019 begins Friday, February 1. Registration forms can be found online at downtownrochestermi.com. Submit completed registration forms to South Street Skateshop (410 Main). There is a registration Fee of $20.00 (plus tax) for one blank skateboard deck. The registration deadline is Friday, April 12.

South Street Skateshop winter hours (now – March 17) are Monday – Wednesday, 11:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.; Thursday 11:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. Friday, 11:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.; Saturday, 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.; and Sunday, 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Starting on March 18th South Street Skateshop will switch over to their spring hours, Monday – Saturday 11 a.m. – 8 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.
