April McCrumb and the staff of believe that love can be the best medicine.

That's why they have been encouraging customers of the downtown gift shop to bring in handmade Valentine's Day cards, which they will distribute to patients at the DMC Children’s Hospital of Michigan.

So far they have collected more than 500 cards at their Rochester and Berkley locations, mostly from school groups, church groups and sororities.

“Sometimes it’s easy to forget that doing something small can really make a big difference,” McCrumb said. “Even though we’re not doctors or nurses, we still can prescribe some of the best medicine there is — love.”

Handmade cards will be collected through the end of Thursday at the shop.
