Cultural Competence Focus Of Royal Oak School District Forum
The forum will work on improving the culture of the district so that it's welcoming to all families and students.
ROYAL OAK, MI — Increasing cultural competence among students and staff will be the focus of the Royal Oak School District’s “Forward Together" Community Forum on March 14. The meeting will be held from 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m in the Board Room of district’s central offices, District Offices, located at 800 DeVillen Avenue.
Royal Oak Superintendent Shawn Lewis-Lakin said the forum will work on improving the culture of the district so that it’s welcoming to all families and students. Dr. Jay Marks, Oakland Schools Social Justice and Diversity Consultant, will facilitate the forum. Other goals of the forum include:
- Listening to, and sharing collective experiences relative to Royal Oak Schools.
- Making recommendations for moving forward toward a more unified school community.
- Learning more about what Royal Oak Schools is already doing around diversity, equity and inclusion.
At the end of the meeting, the district will consider how a small group, inclusive of community members, might review and process the recommendations aiming at formulating an action plan.
