Deck Construction Muddles Royal Oak Parking

Parking in downtown Royal Oak is a little harder now with the construction of a new parking deck near the post office.

ROYAL OAK, MI — Construction of a new parking deck on Second Street will add about 550 parking spaces to downtown Royal after it’s completed later this year. In the meantime, construction is making an already tight downtown parking situation even tougher on residents and visitors to the city.

Downtown Royal Oak has an estimated shortage of from 600 to 1,000 parking spaces, city officials have said. The new $15 million dollar parking deck is being built on a former 70-space surface parking lot.
“There is currently a demand for more parking in Royal Oak,” said Greg Rassel, director of the city Department of Public Services. “We have heard about parking concerns from post office customers since the parking deck construction started in January. These kind of projects in an urban environment inconvenience people but there will be more parking when it’s finished.”
