Patch reader Erik writes: "I own a real estate remodeling company and we do a lot of business around Royal Oak. Recently, we have been having major issues with people dumping their contents into our dumpsters and filling them up within a few days of them being dropped off. We had this happen recently to a property on Auburn Drive on the city's northwest side. Is there is a way to let more people and neighbors know about these incidents?"

Sure, we can help raise awareness!

Patch asked City Attorney Dave Gillam what the City Code is for illegal dumping.

Gillam pointed to Section 633-9(A):

It shall be unlawful for any person, firm or corporation to deposit, throw or bury any garbage, rubbish, or other waste material in or upon any street, alley or other public place except in garbage and/or rubbish receptacles as provided in this chapter. It shall be unlawful to deposit, throw or leave such material on the premises of any other person, and it shall be unlawful to bury garbage anywhere in the City.

Any specific complaints should be addressed to the Royal Oak Police Department, Gillam said.

"It's good to raise awareness because there are some people who don't know that you can't just throw your garbage into a dumpster because it's there," said Sgt. Al Carter of the Royal Oak Police. "Someone paid for that dumpster and it belongs to them."

Police have ways to identify people who illegally dump, according to Carter, and a person who violates the city code will be responsible for a municipal civil infraction and is subject to payment of a civil fine, plus costs.

So stay away from your neighbor's dumpster!
