Italian Restaurant To Open In Royal Oak

Pastaio will move into HopCat's old location at 280 W. Fifth Street in Royal Oak.

ROYAL OAK, MI — An Italian restaurant will soon open in the spot previously occupied by HopCat in downtown Royal Oak, multiple news outlets have reported.

The bar chain permanently closed its location at 280 W. Fifth Street last year during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Pastaio, a restaurant originally based in Florida, will move into HopCat's old location, serving up fresh, handmade pasta prepared daily.

The Royal Oak location will be the second for Pastaio founder Pasquale Lamarra. Port St. Lucie is home to the first.

"I really fell in love with Detroit and the Metro Detroit area and I felt there was a need for what it is we do, which is handmade pasta and pizza. We make it in front of your face," Lamarra told The Detroit News.
