Mindfulness training for childbirth and parenting starts Sept. 24
Corewell Health program teaches participants how to control pain and fear by staying present in the moment
Beginning Tuesday Sept. 24, the Corewell Health Center for Mindfulness is offering a 9-week program for new parents who expect to deliver after Nov. 26. Unlike Lamaze or traditional childbirth classes, mindfulness-based childbirth training teaches participants how to manage fear and pain by staying present in the current moment.
“We are so excited to offer this program to our community,” said Dr. Ruth Lerman, an internist specializing in breast health and medical director of the Corewell Health Center for Mindfulness. “Past participants say the class improved their overall attitude, they feel better prepared for childbirth and parenting, can better manage their emotions, and maintain respectful, collaborative relationship with their partners.”
Program participants learn how to stay present in the moment with breathing exercises, meditation and yoga; along with optimum positioning for birthing and breastfeeding and mindfulness-based strategies for newborn care.

According to course instructor, Susan Greenlee, RN, a Corewell Health certified nurse midwife and mindfulness-based childbirth and parenting instructor, “using movement, sounding, touch, mediation and more, participants build a set of tools to face difficult moments, such as a labor contraction, or a crying newborn, growing in their ability to respond thoughtfully rather than react. This course teaches transformative skills for labor, parenting and life.”
“A 2021 randomized, controlled study of MBCP showed the program reduced mothers’ fear of childbirth and increased the likelihood of unmedicated childbirth,” Dr. Lerman added.
