Loaded Gun Left In 3-Year-Old's Backpack, Michigan Mom Charged: Police

An Oakland County child-care center employee found the gun inside the child's backpack, police said.

ROYAL OAK, MI — An Oakland County woman was charged after she left a loaded gun in her 3-year-old's backpack when she dropped her child off at a daycare center, according to the prosecutor's office.

Kelly Reid, 34, of West Bloomfield, was charged with reckless use of a firearm, which is a misdemeanor punishable by up to 90 days and/or a $500 fine. The court can also suspend hunting privileges for up to three years.

On May 14, officials said Reid dropped off her 3-year-old child at a Royal Oak child-care center and gave staff a backpack that was supposed to have the child's snack in it. When an employee opened the backpack, they found a loaded handgun, officials said.

Officials said Reid placed the gun in the child's backpack to carry it to/from her car, but failed to remove it before dropping off her child.

"I'm grateful this is a story about a misdemeanor charge instead of a tragedy," said Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald. "A loaded gun needs to be secured. Failing to do so around small children is absolutely reckless. The employee who found the gun should be commended for quickly securing it and contacting police."
