Royal Oak Moving To Protect Trees
A recent report said Royal Oak is losing trees faster than it's replacing them.
ROYAL OAK, MI — Development, disease and age are threatening to dramatically reduce Royal Oak’s trees and city leaders are moving to protect current trees while adding new. A recent report commissioned by the city says Royal Oak needs to be more aggressive in protecting its tree canopy.
“There is a marked difference in cities that have trees and those that don’t,” said Mayor Michael Fournier. “I think one of the many attractive qualities of living in Royal Oak is our many trees. We need to have a sense of urgency about this.”
Royal Oak’s 11.8 square miles have just over 30 percent tree canopy coverage. The last tree survey done in 1999 showed the city had 26,794 trees.
