ROYAL OAK, MI — Parking in Downtown Royal Oak will be free through the end of January, city offices announced Wednesday.

However, only street parking and field lots will be cover under the new guideline, as parking structures will still charge 75 cents after the first hours, city officials said.

The decision to allow free parking in the city comes at a time when Royal Oak recently transitioned to a new downtown parking system that new high-tech meters.

But some those meters have caused some problems, such as glitches in the parking app and the meters issuing incorrect fines.
