Royal Oak Public Library To Open On Sundays

Starting this September, the Royal Oak Public Library will open on Sundays.

ROYAL OAK, MI — “Back to school” isn’t a phrase school children like to hear in July. But students may not mind quite as much this year because when they return to classes in September, the Royal Oak Public Library will start opening on Sundays for the first time in its long history. Students and parents will not have to travel to Berkley or Clawson to get the materials they need or want.

“It’s been years in the making,” Library Board member Brandon Kolo said. “Survey after survey has shown that (Sunday hours) are the number one desire of residents” at the library, the Royal Oak Tribune reported.
Sunday hours are set for 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and will require hiring at least four part-time employees, said Library Director Mary Karshner. “Sunday hours are popular because people don’t have to feed the parking meters here on Sundays,” she said. “I think feeding the parking meters is the biggest deterrent to people using the library.”
