Jennifer Baum wanted to create something that might give new writers a chance in the marketplace.
That something became Scribe Publishing.
She recently submitted information about the business through the Small Business Spotlight.
Here are her answers.
What does your business offer?
Scribe Publishing Company is a small, independent book publisher, so we publish select fiction and nonfiction from fresh, new authors. Our books have been featured in The San Francisco Book Review, The Midwest Book Review, Kirkus Reviews, School Library Journal, The Detroit News, and more. Scribe Publishing Company’s first title, Easter Ann Peters’ Operation Cool, won 2012 Book of the Year in juvenile fiction from Foreword Reviews.
What's your most popular product or service?
So far, our most popular book has been a cookbook by the blogger Juli Bauer. She focuses on Paleo-style cooking, and the book is titled, "OMG. That's Paleo?" The title is a play on Bauer's blog, PaleOMG.com.
What's a fact about your business that most customers probably don't know?
A lot of people don't understand how traditional publishing works. We aren't a vanity press, so that means authors do not pay to have their work published (they are paid in royalties), but it also means we can't publish every manuscript that is submitted to us.
When was the business founded?
It was founded in 2011.
How did your business come to be?
Our founder, Jennifer Baum, has a background in writing and editing and always enjoyed working with writers. She saw how competitive the publishing industry was, and wanted to create something that might give new writers a chance in the marketplace.
Why did you choose the area you did?
Our business is predominantly carried out online, but the publisher, Jennifer, is a resident of Royal Oak, and she was excited to bring publishing to Michigan.
