A Patch reader writes: "What kind of material did they use to pave Woodward? Its distracting! It appears wet and creates a glare at night. I'm not fond of it."

To answer this question, Patch talked to the MDOT Oakland Transportation Service Center.

Lori Swanson, the project manager of the construction along Woodward, gave this response to the question about the roadway.

"This project utilized standard asphalt materials that MDOT has utilized on multiple projects throughout the metro region. The asphalt material does have some components within the mixture that will gradually leave the pavement over the several months which is completely normal and does not impact the longevity of the road surface.  Therefore, the shiny nature of the pavement will fade to some extent."

City Engineer Matt Callahan adds this:

"After it's been salted the first time, it will never look new again. It will lose all its black shine."
