Ag Employers Receive Help With Government Hiring Requirements

MSU Extension provides details regarding the hiring of employees and the procedures to follow.

EAST LANSING — Michigan State University Extension Agricultural Employer Checklist now provides agricultural employers with updated information about state and federal requirements for hiring employees.

This document, updated September 2011, details information regarding hiring employees, procedures to follow, forms to fill out, and taxes to deduct and to pay.

The checklist includes phone numbers and websites where employers can get more information, publications and forms. Online versions of the checklist contain active website links.

“With the myriad of rules and regulations, employers have difficulty knowing whether they have met all of their legal obligations in the human resource area,” Stan Moore, MSU Extension educator said.

However, the document is not a legal one, he said. It just provides an “easy way for farmers to ensure that they have gone through a systematic process” when hiring seasonal or full-time employees. It helps them to avoid doing anything illegal.
