Hornets Tune Up For Regional
The state's top ranked boys' track and field team continued its strong season at the Golden Triangle meet Friday.

Ranked first in the state, the Hornets' boys track and field team tuned up for the post-season at the Golden Triangle meet held at Friday.
The Hornet athletes competed against 25 other teams in the state in a meet that had all talent but very little of the pressure of a regional tournament.
“We’re still trying people in different events just to see where they might best fit,” said Allan Leslie, who coaches the boys’ team that was ranked first in Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association rankings this week. “We’re looking for what will give us the best chance to be our best when the important part of the season comes in two weeks.”

Leslie was referring to the MHSAA regional, which will also be held at Saline High School, and then the SEC meet.
Garrick Roemer had a big day for Saline. He won the 400 and was second in the 200. He also helped Saline finish the day with a win the in 4-by-400 relay and helped the team to fourth in the 4-by-200 relay.

"He put in a hard day's work and was still working hard in the last event of the day," Leslie said.
Matt Elms won the 800 in 1.55.93. Freshman Logan Wetzel took the 1,600 in 4:22.67.
In the field, John Smutny won the discus with a throw of 148-08.
Leslie said he was happy with the where the team is at this stage of the season. He said he's not worried about the team letting the MITCA ranking go to its head.
"We've got a lot of seniors, like Garrick Roemer, Spencer Bishop and Steve Bastien who've been competing for a lot of years. They just want to win. That's what matters," Leslie said. "On some teams, a freshman like Logan Wetzel coming in and doing what he's doing might be viewed as a threat by some seniors. But our seniors encourage Logan, because they know the better he does, the better the team does."
