Saline Girls Show Star Power, Depth at Golden Triangle Meet

The Hornets picked up victories in a sprint and distance relays, while Abby Rentschler and Elianna Shwayder went 1-2 in the 3,200 and Randi Bennett continued her strong season by winning discus and taking second in shot put.

Coach Mike Smith said the girls showed good focus during a a long, unscored meet held on the eve of prom.

"Considering everything, I thought we ran well today," Smith said.

He pointed out that only two girls in school history had won finished under 11 minutes in the 3,200. Rentschler and Shwayder both did so Friday. The two quickly jumped ahead of the pack. They jockeyed for the top spot for seven laps around the track, rarely separated by more than a few yards. Rentschler took control of the race with a kick in the final 400 yards. She finished in 10:51.97. Shwayder was second in 10:55.99. Amy Creutz was fourth in 11:20.85 and Lauren Green was fifth in 11:23.46.

Saline's other individual victory came in the discus, where Bennett won with a throw of 116-09. She was second in the shot put with a throw of 36-02.

The Hornets also won two relays.

Amanda Luurtsema, Samantha Richart, Quenee' Dale and Alana Hollis won the  4-by-100 relay, with Dale clinching the event in a photo finish. The team finished in 49.61.

Lauren Green, Alyssa Cummings, Gloria Park and Amy Creutz won the 4-by-800 relay in 9:27.60. A second Saline team of Shwayder, Kristin Green, Emily Reyst and Rentschler was second in 9:39.52.

Smith said he was glad to see the girls do well against tough competition.

"You've got a lot of talent assembled here with a lot of schools, so it feels a little like a regional. But we're not scoring the event, so there's not as much pressure," Smith said. "I think we did well here today."
