Saline Harriers First at Siena Heights

The Hornets won five events to edge hometown Adrian.

ADRIAN — That state’s top ranked boys’ track and field team continued its winning ways at Siena Heights University.

Saline finished with 130 points, 28 more than second place Adrian. Ann Arbor Pioneer was third with 93.

The Hornets won five events.

In the field, Steve Bastien jumped eight inches farther than everyone else, winning the long jump with a leap of 22-10. Saline senior Michael Andreas finished tied for third with a jump of 20-10. Michael Smutny won the high jump with a leap of 6-02. Joey Leptich was finished fifth with a jump of 6-0.

Garrick Roemer, who will run next year for the University of Michigan, won the 400 in 49.34, edging Jackson’s Marques Mondy by six one-hundredths of a second. Ryan Gauche took fourth in 51:03.

Terrell McGee had no trouble in the 800, winning in 2:01.07, more than three seconds faster than the second place finisher from Adrian.

Saline’s 4-by-400 relay team was the only Hornet relay champ on the day. Roemer, Gauche, McGee and Chris Slattery won the event in 3:24.30.

Other strong performances came in the:

• 200 dash, where Thomas Eby took fourth in 23:32.

• The 1600, where Grant Praschan was third in 4:35.03.

• The 3200, where Dylan Jennings was second in 10:09.96.

• The 110 hurdles, where Jordan King was fifth in 16.86.

• The 300 hurdles, where Eby was fourth in 41.97.

• The 400-relay, where Roel Galinator, Roemer, Gabe Becton and Bastien were second in 43.39.

• The 3200 relay, where McGee, Gauch, Alex Bertoia and Brayden Dana were third in 8:24.36.

• In the shot, where Nicholas Sawyer was fifth with a throw of 43-11 and Ike Nwokeji was sixth with a throw of 43-09.

• In the discus, where Nwokeji was third (127-02) and John Smutny was sixth (123-00).

• In the pole vault, where Bastien was third, clearing 14 feet, while Vincent Olsen was tied for fifth, clearing 13 feet.

 

 

Saline second at River Rat

A relatively small Hornets team competed at the River Rat Invitational Saturday.

Saline was second with 76.5 points, well behind the winners from Novi Detroit Catholic Central.

Saline’s lone winner on the day was sophomore Kaj Althaus, who won the  pole vault with by clearing 12-06. Tyler Santos was second (11-00).

Mitche Suddendorf and Chris Slattery went 6-7 in the 200 meters. Slattery also had a sixth place finish in the 400. Ryan Wilkie took third in the 800 meters.

Anthony Lamus was fourth in the 1600 (4:29.41). Kevin Allport was seventh in the 1600 meters and sixth in the 3200 meters.

Hunter Krebs finished fifth in the 100 hurdles (16.69).

The 800 relay team of Slattery, Suddendorf, Griffin Wooley and Grant Viahopoulos finished second in 1:30.01.

Nick Sawyer was fourth in the discus (131-06).
