5 Things You Should Know Before Putting out Yard Waste

5 things you need to know before you begin cleaning up your yard for the summer.

Here at Patch, our mission is to, "To make life ridiculously easy for you and your neighbors."

That's why we put together a list of 5 things you need to know before yard waste collection begins in Shelby Township.

  1. Yard waste collection begins April 1 and runs through Nov. 20, 2012.
  2. Twigs, brush and branches should not exceed 1-inch in diameter and must be securely tied in bundles of not more than 4-feet in length and 18-inches in diameter. Bundling of scrap lumber and like materials should be the same dimensions.
  3. Yard waste that will not be accepted: stones, dirt, plastic containers, landscape timbers, brick, landscape fabric, plastic weed barriers, and similar waste that does not compost.
  4. if you're using the green "trash" container for yard waste disposal, it must be clearly labeled as "yard waste" and cannot exceed 75 pounds. Additional waste can be disposed of in paper yard waste bags, which can be found at .
  5. Instead of disposing of grass clippings, spread them on your lawn. Grass clippings can be used as a natural fertilizer because it is made up of 90 percent water and nitrogen, which can deliver nutrients that can feed your lawn.

For more information, call Allied Waste at 800-959-9067.
