Sabrina Roland of Shelby Township has been named the local first place winner in The Art Institute of Michigan’s Storytellers Photography Competition, and Jennifer Kon of Eastpointe has been named the local winner in the Storytellers Photography Competition at The Art Institute of Michigan – Troy, an additional location of The Illinois Institute of Art – Chicago.
The Art Institutes Storytellers Photography Competition challenged high school seniors and high school graduates to tell a visual story for an opportunity to earn a scholarship to a participating Art Institutes school. Entrants were asked to submit six original photographs that tell a story based on the theme Storytelling Through the Lens, along with a 500-800 word artistic vision statement.
Roland, the finalist in the high school senior category at The Art Institute of Michigan, earned a $3,000 scholarship to study photography at The Art Institute of Michigan. Kon, the finalist in the high school senior graduate category, earned a $1,000 scholarship to study photography at The Art Institute of Michigan – Troy.
In addition to their scholarships, the local first place winners progressed to the national round of The Art Institutes Storytellers Photography Competition, where their entries were judged against other local winners from across North America by a panel of professional photographers. The national winner in the high school senior category earned up to a $40,000 tuition scholarship, and the national winner in the high school graduate category earned up to a $10,000 tuition scholarship.
“Each year we are impressed by the quality and creativity of the entries we receive, and this year was no exception,” said Curt Hemmeler, President of The Art Institute of Michigan. “The entrants exceeded all of our expectations and presented us with compelling stories told in innovative ways.”
