Man Found Guilty Of Crash That Killed 2 Women On M-53 In Metro Detroit

SHELBY TOWNSHIP, MI — A Macomb County jury found a Westland man guilty this week of causing a crash that killed two elderly women in Shelby Township earlier this summer, according to the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office.

The crash happened at 12:50 p.m. on June 6 on Michigan 53 (Van Dyke Avenue) near 22 Mile Road in Shelby Township, according to police.

Police said 33-year-old Jose Eugeno Medina-Hernandez was driving a box truck south on Michigan 53 near a construction zone at 22 Mile Road where he smashed into the back of a Buick Verano.

The crash triggered several other crashes in the area, according to police.

The two women inside the Buick, 88-year-old Nancy Richmond and 63-year-old Crystal Brunn, were killed in the crash, according to police.

Medina-Hernandez was also injured in the crash and taken to a nearby hospital where he was treated and released, according to police.

He was later charged with two counts of moving violation causing death. A Macomb County jury found him guilty on both charges, which are each one year misdemeanors.

"Thank you to the Macomb County jury who delivered justice for the families who lost their loved ones in this tragic and preventable crash," Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido said. "Our hearts remain with the victims’ families as they continue to heal from this devastating loss."
