Painting with a Twist of Shelby Township Opens Doors to Artists
The family-run franchise offers a new getaway for friends in town.
Aspiring to bring a new kind of art to Shelby Township, a local resident and mother, Sue Gentry, and her two daughters, Lisa and Kelly Gentry, opened the doors of their Painting with a Twist studio in Shelby Township, a new place where friends come together to paint, drink wine and discover their inner artist.
A pioneer in the Paint and Sip industry, Painting with a Twist, located at 50336 Schoenherr Rd. in Shelby Township, is part of a fast-growing national franchise that provides guests a unique "getaway" through art. A Painting with a Twist class includes friends, paint and the option to BYOB. Led by local art instructors, guests paint on bare 16” by 20” canvases using paint and brushes provided by the studio. The artwork ranges from landscapes, abstracts and cityscapes, to creative renderings of animals, iconic buildings and florals. Friends gather for an evening of laughs, creativity and camaraderie as they create one-of-a-kind pieces of art to take home and, often, discover a newfound talent.
After losing her 21-year-old son, Alex, in a deadly car accident in Nov. 2011, Sue Gentry and her two daughters, Lisa, 27, and Kelly, 25, found that attending classes at Painting with a Twist in Ferndale was a positive outlet for their family during a very difficult time. Realizing that these classes were giving her the empowerment she needed to help her cope, Sue knew that with the help of her two daughters and the support of her husband, Scott, she could bring the concept to Shelby Township and offer others a way to express themselves through art. It was Alex’s passion for art and zest for life and adventure that truly inspired the Gentry’s to move forward and open a Painting with a Twist studio of their very own.
