2010 Census Shows Population Growth in Shelby, Utica
The U.S. has released 2010 census information for Michigan.
Shelby Township and Utica have seen increases in population in the past 10 years, according to U.S. Census data released Tuesday afternoon.
Shelby Township’s population grew 13.3 percent from 65,159 residents in 2000 to 73,804 residents in 2010.
Utica experienced a smaller increase of 3.9 percent. It went from 4,577 residents in 2000 to 4,757 in 2010.

The eighth-most populated state in the U.S., . There are now 9,883,640 residents. The most densely populated state in the country is California, with more than 33 million residents.
Macomb County is the third-largest populated county in the state with 840,978 residents—a 6.7 percent increase from 2000 when there were 788,149 residents. Wayne is the most populated county in Michigan with about 2 million residents.

In Shelby Township and Utica, the housing figures are similar. There are 25,265 homes in Shelby Township, and 24,486 are occupied, leaving 779 or 3.1 percent vacant. Out of 2,005 homes in Utica, 2.6 percent are vacant with 1,952 homes occupied.
