Shelby Shuffles Voter Precincts

Thousands of voters in Shelby will go to new locations in the next election, as part of an updated voter precinct map introduced this summer.

"Our goal was to create a map that would serve the voters in more efficient and comfortable ways," said Clerk Stanley Grot, whose office combined precincts and closed three voting locations, bringing the total number of locations from 18 to 17.

Voters at the affected precincts were notified with a new identification card delivered through a series of mailings which ended earlier this month, Grot continued. While there is not a major election scheduled in Shelby for the remainder of this year, midterm elections in 2014 are expected to serve as a test for the new map.

"We’re going to test this and see how it works. The majority of voters are thanking us. What we’ve been seeing is very positive," Grot said.

The work took place throughout the summer, Grot continued, largely on the strength of interns, and has been approved by the state. Among the changes made were closing locations at the Shelby Community Center, the Boys and Girls Club, and Mae Stecker Park Pavilion.

• Precinct 14: Previously voted at Mae Stecker Park Pavilion, now at Crissman Elementary (53550 Wolf Dr.)
• Precinct 20: Previously voted at the Shelby Community Center, now at Shepherd’s Gate Lutheran Church (12400 23 Mile Rd.)
• Precinct 29: Previously voted at the Boys and Girls Club, now at King of Kings Lutheran Church (47500 Schoenherr Rd.)

"We think this will remain for many years," Grot said.
