Suspected Shelby Twp. Bank Robber Dead After 8-Hour Standoff: Police
Police said the Georgia man took his own life after failed negotiations with Illinois officers that lasted roughly eight hours.
SHELBY TOWNSHIP, MI — A suspected Shelby Township bank robber died last week after an eight-hour standoff with officers in Illinois, according to Shelby Township Police.
Police said the 33-year-old Georgia man walked into the Bank of America at 13750 23 Mile Road at 10:36 a.m. Thursday and approached a teller. The man passed a note to the teller demanding money, according to police.
The man then left the bank and got on a motorized scooter, which he had parked near the bank, according to police.

The man rode the motorized scooter to a nearby semi truck, which was parked in the area and drove away, according to police.
Investigators learned the semi truck was from a trucking company in Illinois and tracked the truck to Effingham, Illinois, according to police.

Officers with the Effingham Police Department found the semi truck parked at a rest stop in the area, according to police.
When Effingham officers tried to arrest the man in connection with the bank robbery in Shelby Township, the man barricaded himself inside the truck with a gun, according to police.
Officers quickly disabled the semi truck and began negotiating with the man, according to police.
The negotiations lasted roughly eight hours before the man took his own life, according to police.
