UCS to Hold School of Choice Open House

Michigan's second-largest school district is open to Macomb residents or residents who live in communities in bordering counties that are serviced by the Macomb Intermediate School District.

Utica Community Schools will host an open house for all Macomb County residents interested in the school of choice program.

The informational meeting will be held on April 18 at 7 p.m. at the Heritage Junior High School on Dodge Park Road.

The open house will introduce parents to the Schools of Choice process, and to teachers and administrators. It will also give them information on the district’s services and programs.

“It’s an opportunity for nonresident parents to learn more about the exemplary programs we offer,” said UCS representative Tim McAvoy.

Since the district started participating the Schools of Choice program seven years ago, it has gained about 1,000 students, according to UCS Executive Director of Pupil Services Chuck O’Conner.

UCS is the second largest school district in Michigan.

“It a win-win situation. Our funding is determined by school enrollment and allows us to maintain the wide choices we have,” said McAvoy.

School of choice is only for Macomb residents or residents who live in communities in bordering counties that are serviced by the Macomb Intermediate School District.

Applications are now available on the UCS website: www.uticak12.org. Applications will be accepted only from April 29 through May 13.
