Fireworks Violations Costly In St. Clair Shores

A violation of the city ordinance can cost $500 or more.

ST. CLAIR SHORES, MI β€” Residents looking to celebrate the Fourth of July by lighting off fireworks at their home may want to rethink the idea. In St. Clair Shores, it’s illegal for for minors to set off fireworks within 200 feet of a residential building or vehicle. Violators of the city ordinance could be fined $500 per count, plus the costs of prosecution.

β€œTypically, anybody even lighting it out in the street is illegal, because it’s within 200 feet” of a structure and on public property,” St. Clair Shores Police Sgt. Jenna Conrad said. β€œWe are extremely strict with these fireworks violations. We specifically have stronger enforcement out around the holidays, and we definitely enforce these ordinances.”
β€œThis is definitely a big issue every year,” Conrad said. β€œI know people sometimes get a little confused because of the fact that the state law is different, but obviously our ordinance supersedes that.”
