St. Clair Shores Battles Mussel Problem

St. Clair Shores City Council recently approved a way to clear mussels from its water system.

ST. CLAIR SHORES, MI — The city’s water system is going to be losing a lot of muscle to build up intake efforts from Lake St. Clair. City council recently approved a new mitigation system that will help clear a major intake pipe clogged full of zebra mussels.

The system will be constructed at the Mile River Intercounty Drainage District facility pump station, which sits in Grosse Pointe Woods park in St. Clair Shores. The current screening system hasn’t kept the zebra mussels out of the intake pipe.

“The intake is out on the lake,” Roger Kaliman, with Tetra Tech, told city council. “This prevents or minimizes zebra mussels getting into the intake pipe. There’s things in there that they can get inside of, and it’s just a maintenance problem.”

“The zebra mussel system is just a chemical storage tank and a couple little feed-pumps,” Kailman said.
