City to Demolish Boat House, Co-op Preschool Buildings

It is just a matter of time before two city buildings are demolished.

Trenton City Council members approved the demolition of two city-owned buildings: the boat house at and the building that housed the , 86 Washington St.

Trenton Mayor Gerald Brown and city council members took a tour of the two buildings and deemed them unfit for use, according to City Administrator Bob Cady.

The boat house had not been used for several years, but the preschool building at was being occupied up to just before the decision was made to approve demolition.

Cady said he and other city administrators attempted to relocate the preschool to the Teifer building, 911 William R St., near Teifer Park.

"They said it was too small for their needs," Cady said. "They said they needed someplace bigger and that they were going to look at some other options. That's the last I heard from them."

Cady added city officials were not charging any money for the preschool to occupy a city building.

Demolition has gone out to bid, and Cady thinks it might begin within a month or two.

Cady said the buildings had been run down for years and the city does not have the money to fix them up.

"We were either going to have to put ta lot of money into it, or we were going to have to do something else," Cady said. "It's tough when you don’t have the money to keep things up the way you should."

A replacement structure for the former nursery building is being discussed by city officials, and is likely to be a shelter similar to other structures in other Trenton parks.

Officials for the Trenton Co-op Nursery could not be reached Tuesday to say whether or not the preschool will continue to exist at a different location.

According the preschool website, Trenton Co-op Nursery leaders are attempting to get alumni together for a final picture on Aug. 31 from 6-9 p.m. at the nursery building at 86 Washington St.

"We would like to get as many alumni as possible to get one last picture before they tear down the preschool," according to the website. "The school has been going on for 56 years. We have made so many memories and long lasting friendships, the school will never be forgotten!"
