St. Philip Lutheran Church Celebrates Earth Day
Pastor Jeff Ogonowski and the congregation participate in a blessing of pollinator and rain gardens

As part of Earth Week and to manifest caring for creation, St. Philip Lutheran Church in Trenton has built a pollinator garden and is constructing a rain garden. In simple terms, a pollinator garden is one that attracts bees, butterflies, moths, hummingbirds, or other beneficial creatures that transfer pollen from flower to flower, or in some cases, within flowers. These hard-working animals help pollinate more than 75% of the world's flowering plants, and nearly 75% of our crops. A rain garden is a depressed area in the landscape that collects rainwater from a roof, driveway, or street, and allows it to soak into the ground.
Pollinators are declining throughout the world and stormwater problems in urban areas are increasing with increasing intensity and frequency of storms as a result of climate change. A special “Blessing of the Gardens” ceremony was held as part of the worship service on Sunday, April 24th.
The pollinator and rain gardens are intended to demonstrate St. Philip’s commitment to caring for creation. It is hoped that these gardens will be an inspiration to other churches, schools, businesses, and homeowners to build pollinator and/or rain gardens.

In the future, St. Philip will be adding bird houses, other habitats, and a trail circling the church. Each stop on the trail will be a teachable moment for our Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and Preschool students.
All are welcome to stop and see these gardens. For more information about St. Philip Lutheran Church, visit: https://www.stphilipelca.com/. For more information about St. Philips Perennial Waters Project, visit: https://www.perennialwaters.org/.
