Trenton's Riverside Hospital to Be Redeveloped as 'Medical Mall'

Trenton's vacant Riverside Hospital will soon become a medical mall, filled with doctors’ offices, a pharmacy, and a center with basic medical diagnostic imaging, after striking a deal with Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital.

A new proposal offered by the current owner of Riverside Hospital, Dr. Iqbal Nasir, was agreed upon by Trenton city administration, as well as Denise Brooks-Williams, president and CEO of Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital.

Construction to convert the hospital into medical offices will start immediately, according to Henry Ford Health System.

The agreement was shared with the Trenton City Council Monday evening.

“I am glad we were able to reach an agreement so that the property can be redeveloped in a manner that will benefit the city of Trenton,” says Brooks-Williams. “We remain committed to being a good neighbor by supporting Trenton and the Downriver communities.”

Under terms of the agreement, the hospital can be converted into medical offices, basic imaging centers and pharmacy services, but cannot be used as a hospital, rehabilitation facility, or any health care-related endeavor that requires a certificate of need from the State of Michigan.

The hospital was closed in 2002 and sold by Henry Ford in 2009. The property has been resold three timed to other entities.

“I am thrilled to know that Henry Ford Health System and Dr. Nasir have reached an agreement on the deed modification that will now let this project go forward. The project is vital to the City of Trenton and, in particular, to its downtown economic vitality,” Trenton Mayor Kyle F. Stack said.
