Victory Day Reunion Brings Trenton Students Closer Together

Trenton High School football players and and cheerleaders visited Jo Brighton Skills Center to have lunch with Victory Day participants Tuesday.

Though Victory Day has come and gone, Trenton students continue to spend time with participants from Jo Brighton Skills Center in Wyandotte.

Trenton football players and cheerleaders and Jo Brighton students talked and munched on pizza Tuesday for a Victory Day reunion lunch. Students shared stories about Victory Day 2012, which was held on Sept. 15 at Trenton High School.

Victory Day founder Aaron Segedi teamed up with Jo Brighton Director April Ritz to set up a post-Victory Day luncheon to allow students one last chance to enjoy each others' company.

"There was no closure to the event last year and we wanted to give some closure to the event," Segedi said.

Trenton football players recently had their end of the season banquet and Segedi said many of the seniors mentioned Victory Day as one of their most memorable moments.

"A lot of them didn't speak about their touchdowns or their tackles," Segedi said. "It was about the leadership manual and it was about Victory Day."

More than 40 Trenton students attended the lunch with more than 20 Jo Brighton students.

Jo Brighton student Miles Smith said eating lunch with the football team was good and his favorite part of Victory Day was scoring a touchdown.

"I did tackling, kicking and touchdowns," Smith said.

Trenton student Roger Barry said he was happy to be eating lunch with Jo Brighton students Alfred and Elizabeth.

"I was happy to come here and to get to see what they do (each day)," Barry said.

Victory Day is an event set up for cognitively and physically impaired children to have an opportunity to play football or cheer and have their moment in the sun, according to Segedi.

The next Victory Day is set for Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013.

Segedi said he plans to schedule next year's post-Victory Day lunch a little closer to September.
