Things to Know About Troy Schools Contract Dispute

Students start the school year on Tuesday while their teachers continue negotiating a contract with Troy School District administration.

1. Troy district teachersΒ and community residents will be picketing at Athens High School to bring attention to a contract dispute from 5:30 toΒ 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3.Β Michigan Education Association Vice President Nancy Strachan, aΒ former President of Wayne-Westland Education Association, who led that union through a four-day walkout in 2008, will be joining teachers in Troy.

2. TEA President Tony Lucchi told Patch earlier this year that the teachers' contracts expired in June. Union officials and district administration have shared multiple contract offers and even worked with a mediator, but have not come to an agreement prior to the start of the 2013-14 school year.

3. A huge sticking point:Β in the negotiations for the 2010-2011 contract, teachers made concessions of almost $11 million, including a pay freeze. District administration at the time called the contract a "compromise," while union officials spoke of "huge sacrifice."Β
