Athens Senior Wins Women of AT&T Scholarship

As high school seniors across Michigan prepare in the weeks ahead to cross the commencement stage, receive their diplomas and ready for college in fall, the Women of AT&T today announced the student winners of five college scholarships to help with the costs of higher education.

Drake Gamelin, a senior at with plans to attend Roosevelt University in Chicago, will receive a $1,000 scholarship from the Women of AT&T, a group of AT&T employees who are organized to connect and inspire members to achieve their personal and professional goals and to effect change in the community.  The scholarship is based on academic performance and all around citizenship.

“As a company and as a network of colleagues here in Michigan, we know the importance of education and helping students prepare for good careers,” said Jane Ward, president of the Women of AT&T Michigan. “One thousand dollars may be a small contribution in the overall cost of college, but we hope it is a large token of the respect and appreciation we have for these students who have achieved in high school and plan for big things in the future.”

Earlier this spring, AT&T launched a quarter-billion-dollar national campaign, AT&T Aspire, to help more students graduate from high school ready for careers and college, and to ensure the country is better prepared to meet global competition.

Additional scholarship winners live in Hartland, Detroit, Warren and Grosse Pointe were recognized in a ceremony yesterday evening, May 16, at AT&T’s Southfield office complex located at 23500 Northwestern Hwy.
