Hawks & Socks: Hamilton Students Donate to Kids in Need

School secretaries encouraged students to collect hundreds of pairs of socks for Oakland Family Services foster care programs.

On Wednesday morning, students wrapped up their three-week "Head to Toe" fundraiser, during which they collected socks for kids and adults in need.

School secretaries created the fundraiser during Administrative Assistants week after deciding that, in lieu of receiving gifts and things for themselves, they wanted Hamilton students to give back to area kids.

"It makes me feel warm inside," said 10-year-old Sean Hodges, who helped collect and count the socks Wednesday.

"It makes me feel proud," added 10-year-old Joanna Chang, who also helped.

But how many socks did Hamilton students collect altogether?

"Last time we counted, we had 218, but I feel like we have a lot more now," 11-year-old Annie Smuts said Wednesday morning.

Annie was right. After counting again, Sean, Joanna and Annie determined the astounding final total: 755 pairs of socks.

As a reward for their community service, Hamilton students and staff all got to wear hats to school Wednesday.

The socks will be donated to Oakland Family Services for use in its foster care programs.
