A Look At This Troy High School's Field Trip To The DIA
Troy Athens High School students are engaging with history and culture at the Detroit Institute of Arts.

TROY, MI — Twice a year, high school fine arts students from Troy Athens High School experience culture and history from around the world at the Detroit Institute of Arts through interactive field trips.
“The DIA helps students engage with artwork and build an appreciation for creativity,” said Jennifer McLellan, art teacher at Troy Athens High School. “Free field trips to the DIA bring classroom lessons to life, allowing students to experience the work of world-class artists in person instead of in books or online.”
During the field trip, students explored the museum to identify their favorite artists and art pieces from the DIA’s collection, which includes more than 65,000 objects.

“Seeing so many perspectives on other cultures during different time periods really helped me understand the world on a deeper level,” said Srishti Bagalkoti, a 10th grade student at Troy Athens High School.
The DIA provides free field trips and free transportation to more than 62,000 students from over 700 Macomb, Oakland and Wayne County schools each school year.

“The DIA’s one-of-a-kind art collection, which includes pieces that span thousands of years, sparks creativity and inspires DIA visitors, especially children and teenagers,” said Salvador Salort-Pons, DIA director. “We are a leader in education and work with schools across the tri-county region to immerse students in art and cultural experiences that supports what they are learning in school.”
Free field trips are funded by the tri-county millage, which was passed in 2012 and provides free admission to residents of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties and free bus transportation for any tri-county group of 25 or more.
