Man Charged In Oakland County Armed Robbery: Prosecutor

Police said a man walked into the gas station and pointed an AK-47 style rifle at the clerk, demanding cash from the register.

TROY, MI — A Detroit man has been charged in connection with an Oakland County armed robbery, according to prosecutors.

Joseph Louis Carter, 39, of Detroit, was charged with armed robbery, possession of a firearm by prohibited person, two counts of felony firearm (second offense).

If convicted, Carter could face up to 10 years in prison.

The armed robbery happened at 2:40 a.m. on Oct. 30 at the Shell Gas Station, located at 6951 Rochester Road in Troy, according to police.

Police said Carter walked into the gas station and pointed an AK-47-style rifle at the clerk, demanding cash from the register. The clerk handed over an undisclosed amount of cash and the man fled the gas station on foot, according to police.

There were no injuries in the robbery, according to police.

Investigators used security camera footage from the gas station and surrounding properties to identify the Carter's vehicle at the time of the robbery and find him.

"More than simply a theft, armed robberies endanger retail employees and customers with a threat of violence," Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said. "This was not an easy case, but the diligent collaboration between Troy Police and the AFT allowed law enforcement to identify and apprehend this defendant. We now have the opportunity to hold him accountable for this crime."
