Minimum Wage To Increase In Michigan In New Year

MICHIGAN — Michigan's minimum wage will increase by 22 cents to $9.87 on Jan. 1, a slight bump from $9.65 in 2021.

Employees with tips will get a wage increase of 8-cents to $3.75, the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity confirmed.

Michigan is among 21 states boosting the minimum wage in the new year. Thirty-five cities and counties are also doing the same. In 33 of those jurisdictions, the wage floor will reach or exceed $15 per hour for some or all employers, according to a report by the National Employment Law Project.

Later in 2022, four additional states and 22 local jurisdictions will also lift their wagefloors—17 of them to $15 or more, the report said.

California is set to have the highest minimum wage in the country, with $15 in 2022.

Meanwhile, the federal wage remains as it has been since 2009 — $7.25 per hour, which is the longest stretch since the adoption of a minimum wage in 1938. The federal tipped wage has been frozen at $2.13 for even longer, since 1991.
